Alternator Conversion for Powering an E-bike
posted September 22, 2023
Austin has built an alternator-powered bicycle using a car alternator that was converted into a motor. He explains how the conversion works and shows a video of the project. He faced some challenges with the motor controller and the centrifugal clutch, which resulted in poor performance and noise.
He starts by giving some background information on the previous video that showed how to convert a car alternator into a go-kart motor. He then briefly describes the principle of the alternator motor, which is similar to a brushless motor, except that the rotor is an electromagnet instead of permanent magnets. He also demonstrates how to reverse the direction of the motor by swapping any of the two phases.
He then proceeds to install the converted alternator onto a bicycle, using an old bike that already has a battery mount. He intended to use a programmable sensorless controller to control the motor, but encountered a problem with the controller spinning the motor at a low rpm when powered on. He contacted customer support and learned that the controller was not suitable for electric vehicles.
He then came up with the idea of using a centrifugal clutch to overcome the problem of the controller. He installed the clutch and tested the bike, but found out that the clutch was slipping non-stop and the motor had terrible starting torque. He also commented on the noise and the temperature of the motor. He concluded that the alternator motor was not a good choice for a bicycle.
